Sodium Benzoate is Safe

Sodium benzoate was one of the chemicals used in 19th century industrialized food production making it one of the longest used preservatives still in use. It is naturally occurring in a variety of plants as well as in seafood and dairy, but for industrial use it is produced through synthesis. It is safe, with the US Food and Drug Administration including sodium benzoate on its list of direct food substances affirmed as Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS). It has also been assessed by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel, a group responsible for evaluating the safety of skincare and cosmetic products concluding that it is safe for use in cosmetic products.


Uses of Sodium Benzoate

Sodium benzoate inhibits the growth of potentially harmful bacteria, mold, and other microbes in food, thus deterring spoilage. This makes for a variety of uses in food, cosmetics and medicine.

Foods

Sodium benzoate, also known as E211 was the first preservative allowed by the FDA for use in food products. It is used in food products such as dressings, sodas, juices and jams. pickles, condiments and a variety of other products.


Cosmetics

Sodium benzoate is often used as a preservative in cosmetics and personal care items. This product is becoming more popular in personal care and can be found in many items for skin care, hair products, baby wipes, toothpastes, and mouthwash.


Medical

Sodium benzoate is often used as a preservative in prescription medications, particularly in liquid medicines such as cough syrup. It can also be a lubricant in pill manufacturing, making tablets transparent and smooth, rapidly breaking down after swallo


In some cases sodium benzoate may be used to treat elevated blood levels of ammonia. It may also be used as a treatment for urea cycle disorder


Other Uses

Sodium benzoate is a corrosion inhibitor and can be used in product such as engine coolant to help deter corrosion in engines and other metal products.


It may be used also as a stabilizer in photo processing and can be used to improve the strength of certain plastics.
